Maine Restaurant Week- March 1-10, 2010

This is the second year for this statewide event, offering all of us an affordable and fun reason to explore new restaurants and visit old favorites during March, traditionally one of the quietest months of the year for Maine restaurants.

Restaurants will once again showcase their signature dishes on specially priced, prix fixe menus. For 2010, restaurants will serve three-course meals priced at 20.10, 30.10 or 40.10, during Maine Restaurant Week.

Two additions this year: a few select inns, hotels and B&Bs will be offering special lodging rates (a great excuse to visit a distant restaurant and take a mini-vacation), and some restaurants will serve an optional lunchtime Restaurant Week menu for 15.10.

If you become a Facebook fan. You'll be the first to know when all restaurants and menus are announced.

Maine Restaurant Week is possible because of support from brands like MaineLovesFood.com and its sponsors, which include Down East Magazine, Maine Restaurant Association, Maine Office of Tourism, Constellation brand (Robert Mondavi, Clos du Bois, Ravenswood, Estancia and Kim Crawford wines), Portland Press Herald, Shipyard Brewing, Cold River Vodka, LL Bean Visa Card, MPBN, American Express, Oakhurst Dairy, Citadel Broadcasting (102.9 FM, 97.9 FM, 94.9 FM and 94.3 FM), Portland Pirates, Native Maine Produce and Maine Innkeepers Association.

This time of year, it’s hard not to fantasize about the summer farmer’s markets.

Weathered wooden bins overflowing with ripe tomatoes, juicy berries, delicate greens, fat zucchini. Not to mention the special camaraderie that develops between shopper and farmer, week after week. Sharing recipes, talk of the weather, restaurant gossip. The farmer’s market is a wonderful place to be.
Must we forego all that just because it’s winter?
We think not!

Enter the Brunswick Winter Market, with over 40 vendors. You’ll find it every Saturday (until mid-April when it moves outside), 9 to 12:30 at Fort Andross.  It’s called a winter market, instead of a farmer’s market for a good reason. Many vendors are small purveyors who make their food with local ingredients. There are  bakeries, seafood vendors, dairies, meat producers, farmers and even a coffee roaster.

Here are some of our favorites.

PS - Look for many of these vendors at the NOW OPEN Portland indoor market on Free Street.
